Codes and conventions are systems of signs, which create meaning that shows and gives information and ideas about a place or organization by simply showing some symbolic pictures. There are lots of information in our country that are distributed or delivered through specific technical or symbolic codes. These codes does not merely give us information but also entertainment at some sort.
Say for example, in the tourism-educational aspect, one way of introducing us with the most visited places and tourist attractions in our country is through postcards. Through the technical codes like showing images with breath-taking views, it enables us to familiarize places even if we haven’t been there before so technically it is advantageous. However, due to the quick evolution of media, postcards nowadays are slowly becoming obsolete since the New Media, specifically the Internet is more accessible than it is today.
When it comes to entertainment, there are also lots of images on postcards that reflect famous media personalities like actors and actresses, social media icons, YouTubers, and too many to mention.
If I were to create a postcard for a place or if given the chance, I would grab the opportunity to feature Bato, Leyte itself and highlight all its undiscovered scenic spots. Aside from giving significant information, it also aids on enhancing and promoting local tourism, with the use of images taken from a camera with, which are one of the technical or symbolic codes.
They say, “ A picture is worth a thousand words.” Images are more attractive than words alone. By simply flashing picture with beautiful scenes, it will for sure give a number of information. Therefore, using images as a technical or symbolic code can give information that is very dependent to the viewer’s wide scale of interpretation.
Seeking the right information from an online channel is completely devastating. I mean, imagine yourself absorbing either facts, misinformation, or both, without even trying to evaluate if the sources are reliable and accurate at the same time.
At some point, how do we find information that matches our needs? As responsible internet users, we must be selective just as how a wise consumer in a sinking economy opt to select only the basic commodities that are necessary for survival. We ourselves must consider getting those information that matches our needs and set aside those irrelevant ones aside. Seeking information online is like doing a research. We need to search those information that fills up the gap and simply answers the research question along the way. We also need to highlight the sources on the reference list to make it more ethical.
But the question is, how do we chose from the wide variety of information made available by sources? We must actually have to consider the author firsthand. If we know the author well or if we’ve done a background check, we can tell of his or her written piece passed the accuracy and reliability standards.
Therefore, in order for us to avoid getting toxic information, we must be watchful. We must be investigative enough and most importantly, we must be selective enough.
Sta. Fe was named from the first (1st) occupant of the barangay, in the name of FERNANDO and SANTA. Santa was taken from the wife’s name and Fe is from Fernando, the husband. Since the couple was the only resident in the area, they’re the one who give name and they called it SANTA FE. Way back 1820, the couple found a “wooden tablet” called TAPARAN, where the image of Santo Nino became the Patron of the barangay and also the beginning of the celebration of the festivity. Barangay Itum and Barangay Agbanga was still part of Barangay Sta. Fe when the festivity started. People of different Islets of Cebu, Bohol and other neighboring places came in and married to the woman from the barangay and prefer to settle down and stay in the area. Most of the constituents were fishermen because of the abundance and rich fishing grounds at ease. They used fishnets, spearheads and nylon with hook called pasol in fishing, some were using motor banca while others using bugsay in fishing. Barangay Sta. Fe was the 22nd barangay of the Municipality of Matalom, Leyte located along national highway bounded in the north by Barangay Itum, Matalom, Leyte; # in the south by Barangay Cahagnaan, Matalom, Leyte; in the east bound by Barangay Esperanza, Matalom, Leyte; and the west bound of Canigao Channel. It was approximately 5,000 kilometers away from Matalom proper and 20,000 kilometers away from Maasin City, Southern Leyte. The barangay was also a mountainous and of broad area with a large field of coconut trees, rice and corn products owned by dominant occupants. It has been distributed equally in the economic way of living by land and marine resources. Above all mean of livelihood in every different natures is the through the showers and blessings of our Patron Senior Santo Nino for each and every people resides in the barangay.
Media and information literacy enables people to interpret and make informed judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and producers of media and information in their own right.
As users of the broadly termed “Social Media,” all of us must be literate enough to identify accurate information other than fictitious ones. We must be vigilant enough to identify the truth of everything rather than the fake ones.
This might be the reason why “Media and Information Literacy” has been integrated on Senior High School subjects. It enables students as we are, to enhance our abilities to read, analyze, and evaluate information from a variety of media forms, which means educating students to have a wider knowledge not only through mere physical instructions but also in digital aspect.
What is Media?
Media is defined as the sources of information which can be relayed through various channels of communication. It can be classified into three types: The Print Media, Broadcast Media, and Digital or New Media. It generally refers to the communication channels through which we disseminate news, music, movies, education, and other data that describes the various ways through which we communicate in society.
Media is the best medium of communication for mass audience. With the help of various media digital media amd print media, the mass communication method is accomplished in a suitable way.
The purpose of being information and media literate is to engage in a digital society; one needs to be able to understand, inquire, create, communicate and think critically. It is important to effectively access, organize, analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a variety of forms.
To be media literate is to be informed about and able to understand the content of all media forms. The skill has been recognized as important in the 21st Century – many schools now offer contemporary subjects in ‘Media and Information Literacy’ which teaches students about this skill. Students are taught how to analyze and evaluate media messages in different forms.
Over the past few generations media has shifted from newspapers to the television. From the television news media became more mobile on the Internet with breaking news at our fingertips. Isn’t is mind-slapping? Or nerve-wrecking?

Media convergence refers to the ability to transform different kinds of media into digital codes, which is then accessible by a range of devices. This implies the blending of multiple media forms into one platform for purposes of delivering a dynamic experience.
Media is very important to the society. People are using the media to get the news or information from television, radio and video. According to the survey, people mostly spend their time on television and internet for getting news and for entertainment. But the impacts of television and computer have both positive and negative. For the advantages of television and internet, we can get the news and information quickly and more convenient.
The mass media is very important to the society also because people mostly get the news or information. The mass media is using the broadcast media to transmit their information electronically and comprises television, radio, and firm. Besides that, print media use a physical object as a mean of sending their information, such as newspaper, comic, magazine and more to name.
Come to today, media has become as important as food and clothing. There is no denial that the media is playing important roles in our life. With the medium of media whether it is radio, television, newspaper or internet, we are able to connect with the world or a large number of people around us.
