Media and information literacy enables people to interpret and make informed judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and producers of media and information in their own right.

As users of the broadly termed “Social Media,” all of us must be literate enough to identify accurate information other than fictitious ones. We must be vigilant enough to identify the truth of everything rather than the fake ones.

This might be the reason why “Media and Information Literacy” has been integrated on Senior High School subjects. It enables students as we are, to enhance our abilities to read, analyze, and evaluate information from a variety of media forms, which means educating students to have a wider knowledge not only through mere physical instructions but also in digital aspect.

What is Media?

Media is defined as the sources of information which can be relayed through various channels of communication. It can be classified into three types: The Print Media, Broadcast Media, and Digital or New Media. It generally refers to the communication channels through which we disseminate news, music, movies, education, and other data that describes the various ways through which we communicate in society.

Media is the best medium of communication for mass audience. With the help of various media digital media amd print media, the mass communication method is accomplished in a suitable way.

What is Media Literacy?

The purpose of being information and media literate is to engage in a digital society; one needs to be able to understand, inquire, create, communicate and think critically. It is important to effectively access, organize, analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a variety of forms.

To be media literate is to be informed about and able to understand the content of all media forms. The skill has been recognized as important in the 21st Century – many schools now offer contemporary subjects in ‘Media and Information Literacy’ which teaches students about this skill. Students are taught how to analyze and evaluate media messages in different forms.

Lastly, why is media important?

Media is very important to the society. People are using the media to get the news or information from television, radio and video. According to the survey, people mostly spend their time on television and internet for getting news and for entertainment. But the impacts of television and computer have both positive and negative. For the advantages of television and internet, we can get the news and information quickly and more convenient.

The mass media is very important to the society also because people mostly get the news or information. The mass media is using the broadcast media to transmit their information electronically and comprises television, radio, and firm. Besides that, print media use a physical object as a mean of sending their information, such as newspaper, comic, magazine and more to name.

Come to today, media has become as important as food and clothing. There is no denial that the media is playing important roles in our life. With the medium of media whether it is radio, television, newspaper or internet, we are able to connect with the world or a large number of people around us.
